Staff welcome travelers to the Information Center

Hakodate leaves all of its visitors impressed with its outstanding night view from Mt. Hakodate. While this remarkable view of Hakodate’s iconic tombolo and outstretched metropolis can be viewed throughout the day, it comes to a climax after the sun sets boasting a truly unique array of lights. But within this great view lies an abundance of unique facts, history, and adventures. While it's difficult to see from Mt. Hakodate, you can climb the Goryokaku tower to see the star-shaped fort; both a marvel of architecture and combat, as well as a focal point in the city's history. You can reach Hakodate easily by airplane via Hakodate Airport, or you can travel by Shinkansen. It is the 3rd largest city in Hokkaido, and is the closest to the main island of Japan. The port aspect to the city attributes its dynamic culture and exciting array of things to do that will surely not disappoint any visitor to the area.

  • Hakodate Airport’s warm and welcoming information center greets its visitors right across from the exit after baggage claim. Sporting a soft color palette that was selected by vote of the locals reflects important parts of Hakodate culture, and the center is kept pristinely organized and features a remarkable amount of inspiring points of interest. The Hakodate market overflows with seasonal finds and fresh ingredients; the aprons worn by the staff are a tip-of-the-hat to this must-see scene. Throughout the information center, there are various handmade displays and illustrations. Among these and even warranting an award, their Donan (a term referring to the south of Hokkaido) Bito (meaning person) cards are a meticulous effort planned and made by the information staff themselves.

  • Totaling over 150 cards written by the staff and other locals, the Donan Bito Cards are used to recommend locations not found by typical searching in order to create the best possible opportunities for visitors to discover and plan. Their sprawling map-table offers a fun and interactive way to show where important locations are, conveniently located right by their charismatic vending machine selling coupons, donan-bito card holders, and useful items for traveling. The center was renewed recently in 2022, and since then has seen remarkable growth, currently reaching 50% in its amount of tourism related information. This growth has also resulted in significant updates to the building and service for universal access. Much of the staff has learned sign language to make the service accessible to the hearing impaired, as well as many other features to make sure anyone can receive assistance. The building itself has also been renewed to improve access for all.

  • Originally from Sado Island of Niigata prefecture, Ms. Hoshino had always wanted to live in Hakodate and finally achieved that goal 8 years ago. This enthusiasm has clearly been attributed to her knowledge of the area as she is quick to recommend great experiences, especially ones that may not be easily found by searching the internet. She also has an affection for airports in general, so this information center was simply an ideal location for her. She prides herself in being able to direct visitors to the best spots for fun and relaxation based on personal experience. She especially knows the best cafes and other coffee spots and loves to help others discover and enjoy them. Overall, the staff are kind and humble people who share their vast knowledge of Hakodate and ability to help others enjoy it at the information center.

  • Aside from her fascination with airports and their unique appeal to her, Ms. Hoshino is genuinely happy and feels a sense of accomplishment when she knows she has influenced a guest's itinerary for the better. When asked why she chose to work at a place like the information center, this was one of her biggest reasons, along with being her success in other airline based jobs and roles in the hotel industry. Additionally, and perhaps something many can relate to, the feeling of being challenged is something that resonates with her in terms of what constitutes a career position. Whether Hakodate Airport is one more step towards a defining role, or is indeed that role, Ms. Hoshino knew early on that it was the place for her to be. She shared a story about a traveler coming in search of photography opportunities, for which she was able to give a number of recommendations. The photographer later returned to show the pictures they took, and even came back in the summer to capture more unforgettable moments in that season as well.

  • With the opportunity to sit down with her and discuss a bit about herself and career in Hakodate, it was easy to see why she had chosen such a place to live and press on with her role.

  • Q:What kind of place do you think an information center should be?

A:It's a place where people should be able to find out about the area beyond what can be viewed on the internet. Especially to get a personal recommendation from someone you can communicate with and who knows the area.

  • Q:What do you love most about your job at this tourist information center?

A:I just love being able to help people find the perfect plan for their stay here; it's nice knowing that they will be able to have a memorable experience.

  • Q:What would you recommend to those visiting Hakodate?

A:Each season has something unique. Spring and fall are great for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, especially at Goryokaku. Summer is filled with festivals and other activities, and winter is great for snowsports and seeing frost-covered trees. In addition, the night view from Mount Hakodate is famous, but there's also a wonderful 'reverse' night view from Hakodate Shindo Expressway. In general, enjoy the food, visit historical sites, and experience nature!

  • Q:What would be your message to visitors from overseas?

A:Hakodate is a place where, right when you arrive, you have so many options. We're all waiting here and excited to help anyone and everyone find the best things to do, and of course the locals’ recommendations are the best!
